Venturing out for the day

Ds1 informed us at the weekend he no longer wants to wear nappies. Which is great but we were completely unprepared as, despite our efforts over the last few months, he had shown zero interest up until now.

So far he’s making the potty for his first and last wee of the day, the rest he’s doing it in his trousers but, in the hope that this improved by the weekend (he will have got better by then won’t he??) when we plan on going out for the whole day, I’d like your tips please as to what we do when we are out.

Do we just take one of the potties with us and lots of wipes and sacks or do we have to buy one of those expensive travel potties?

Is it worth getting a liner for the car seat?

Any tips generally too as we are completely winging this now! Thank you

So we've just finished potty training our 3 year old. We initially started training at 1year 1/2 but he's only gotten the hang of it, so you're so lucky yours was enthusiastic about losing the nappy 😂👍🏻.

I did buy a travel potty for the car and we personally never really got use out of it. Go to primark (or Penney's) and get yourself a TONNE of 'big boy' pants and cheap tracksuit bottoms. Maybe just throw a towel folded onto your car seat just in case. Bring him to the loo any chance you get, if you have access to it in a coffee shop etc. You're right, don't venture too far at the moment. And also be prepared for putting on more washes than usual😂😂.

Don't know if this will help you at all.. but we also bought one of these on amazon, for using outside the house. Just because my son was terrified of falling down the toilet etc. They fold up and come with a little bag to bring with you. You'll prob need some detol wipes in your bag though just because .. lol

No need to get a special liner for the car seat - I always improvise with a plastic bag and a small towel. You could try a travel potty, some children will use them, others don't like them. It works out expensive to buy one for the short period of time that they are useful, I would just stick their home potty under the pram.

Thanks for the tips! Lots of pants and extra trousers bought, didn’t order the travel potty but did cancel day out at the weekend. Going to stay nearer to home until we are a bit kore confident.

How long does it usually take? I’ve read everything from a week to months! He’s just turned three so I’m hoping it’s not too long....

With both of mine we went out and about from the beginning because I can’t stand being cooped up for too long with energetic children. I did the same as I did at home-stuck them on the potty every 20-30 minutes for the first few days and then increased the gaps over time until I was confident they were holding it and had started actually asking to go. Didn’t actually give them the chance to have accidents! With dc1 I only ever ventured as far as the park or shops for the first few days but would just stop along the way to either use a cafe toilet or to wee on some grass/by a tree. Dc2 was more challenging as I had school runs so had to go out but again I just stopped and sat her on the potty at regular intervals while we were out. I avoided car journeys for a week but actually both were dry after a couple of days and I trusted them to tell me after a week. I used a potette but without the expensive liners. Just either used it over a toilet or behind a tree.

Has anyone had any problems with potty shyness? It would be great to say I can just it him on a potty but what if he refuses especially when we are out?

He’s already now only doing tiny wees and I’m worried he’s going to get an infection soon by holding it in.
