Potty training

Can’t decide if it’s going well or not.

My son is 2 years 7 months. I decided to try potty training this weekend as it’s the bank holiday weekend and I have more days to give it a go.

We started yesterday with no clothes on bottom half. We had 3 wees and a poo on the floor within the first hour and a half. I asked him to go to the potty, and the last time he did but wouldn’t sit down.
He went in a nappy for his nap but then later had an accident - I took him to the toilet instead of the potty and he had a wee! So we had lots of praise and he was very pleased.

Day two (today) he’s had two wees on the floor and 2 in the toilet. Both toilet trips were prompted by me. He had a wee at 10:15 and then I took him outside to play. He didn’t have any accidents, I brought him in at 11:30 to see if he needed to go and he didn’t. He had lunch and I tried again at 12:30, and he was starting to say no to going to have a wee and would take the potty seat off the toilet when we walked into the bathroom. I tried him again at 1 because he was going for a nap, and still no wee. He had had a lot to drink as he’d had both a snack and his lunch in that time.

I don’t know if it’s too soon. When he wets himself he stops and looks down but makes no move towards the toilet/potty. I’ve been waiting an hour between toilet tries so that he doesn’t feel overwhelmed. And I’ve told him it’s toilet time rather than asking but he still says no.

The thing with toilet training is that the child needs to notice BEFORE they go. Sounds like he's not quite there yet. Which is totally normal at that age. Of course there are exceptions, but in my experience potty training is a doddle when your child expresses an interest in going to the toilet and being out of nappies. He may verbally say it, or you may just find him trying out the potty or loo. That's the moment to go for it.

You know I think I’d put pants on him so it doesn’t just go on the floor and he’d feel wet and a bit uncomfortable. I’d have him sit on potty for a few minutes, Reading a book or whatever, if nothing happening no big deal. My son had one accident pooing in his pants which was so yuck it never happened again! My son used a potty but I’m pretty sure my daughter insisted on using the normal toilet. Both were encouraged by me saying they were a big boy/ girl now and needed to use toilet like mummy/daddy. I think within a couple weeks they were dry at night too. My daughter developed a habit of holding her wee and had a couple accidents at reception age which she still remembers (she’s 14 now).
