Potty Training 3.5yr Old! Help!

My son is 3 years and 7 months now and still doesn’t seem interested or ready to potty train and I’m not sure what to do! I’m getting a bit worried!
A lot of my friends have advised me not to worry and that he’ll do it when he’s ready but just want some advice on how to get the ball rolling.
We’ve tried in the past to sit him on the potty for like an hour at a time and of course he eventually did do a wee but that’s purely because he’d been sat there for so long! I didn’t think this was the best training method so I put the nappy pants back on for a few months. Recently when I have put him in underpants he has just wet or pooed himself but then tells me after that he’s done it and then he gets embarrassed and upset 🙁 I just don’t know whether this means he’s still isn’t ready or whether I have to keep going with the underpants?? Do you need to just let them keep wetting/pooing themselves till they get it or like I’ve mentioned above, does it mean I should leave it another month or so?? I just don’t know what to do for the best!! Fortunately he’s not at school till September 2019 as his birthday is October and his preschool are really good about it saying that I shouldn’t push him but any advice or similar stories would be greatly appreciated! He did have speech and language therapy in the months leading up to Christmas as he was behind with his speech but he has come on loads with his talking now with the help of preschool and a few therapy sessions and now needs no further intervention plus I had my second baby end of November so thought these could have been factors in delaying him?? Just wondered if it’s normal for a boy to do it this late? I feel like this is the one aspect of parenting I just can’t deal with 🙁
Thank you xx

Have you tried bribery?

We put up a home made wall chart and bought a packet of star stickers and every time he had a wee he got a star and every time he had a poo he got two. And there was a drawing of a present at the end of it. We had the present bought beforehand. We wouldn't tell him what the present was and he got all excited.

He also got a biscuit every time he had a wee too. Sure it meant that for a few days he was more biscuit than child, but it was a big incentive.

I'm in exactly the same boat, my child will be 4 in late september I'm really trying not to panic as everyone has been telling me to relax to wait, I even went to the the GP but i was somewhat fobbed off rather than reassured.
It seems it's the later edges of normal for a boy, but know that doesn't make it happen any quicker.

We have not really tried bribery properly yet so it may be worth trying. We go on holiday in just over a week so going to leave trying again till after we get back now as I just wouldn’t want the stress of it all on holiday as we want to have a nice relaxing time. But after we get back I just might try it cold turkey so ditch the nappy pants altogether and just keep going, I’ll get a reward chart and treats and just go for it, I guess the first few days I’ll be cleaning up a lot of mess but hopefully after a few days it’ll start to click. You never know what method is going to work I suppose until you try it but a lot of people have said you’ve just got to go for it. I really hope it all falls into place soon 😕 xx

Thanks for your response too (attackofthe50footwoman) it’s just nice to know sometimes that you’re not alone and that there are other parents going through similar scenarios, my friend’s son didn’t crack it till he was 3 years 9 months, also a lady on netmums said her youngest was 3 and 10 months and a guy my husband works with said his oldest son was 4 when he finally cracked it so I guess some are just ready later. Good luck with yours 😊 xx

My lo was not ready until 3 year 10 months. When he was ready he got it in 2 days and has not had an accident since.
Don’t stress too much - he’ll get there soon enough.
I did use love hearts which are his favourite he got one for each wee or poo he did.

At 3.7 I'd be starting on the bribery as he's likely to be physically ready if he has no SN or other obvious issues.
Get some kind of singing potty if he likes that kind of thing. Stay in for a couple of days if you can and keep him nappy/trouser free while he starts.
Mine were younger but also both fell for the nappies having to be given to the babies and the shops not making nappies for 2 and a half year olds now! You could try that.
