Son only poos standing up

Hi my little boy is nearly 3 and has really struggled with potty training.

In the last week weeing has clicked and he is almost totally dry. However although his keen to poo in the loo it haut isn't happening. He can only poo standing up and holding to something (chair ect). I've tried using steps to help into squat position without success.

I'm taking gently and trying not to stress him out. However im not sure what to do next

My dd does this - her stools are firm and hurt (see my other thread - for tmI haha). Are they very firm? Would a stool softener help?
