Potty training

DS 3 refuses to take off nappy and will only sit on potty with it on

DS turned 3 last week and so I decided to bite the bullet and start toilet training him. Total disaster so far. Sad

He wouldn´t sit on the trainer seat at all so I thought maybe he would respond better to a potty. Anyway he will sit on it but only fully clothed. As soon as I try to remove his nappy he becomes distraught. We bought "daddy pants" last week but he won´t even put them on, he becomes so upset I don´t want to force him. It doesn´t make any difference that he sees his elder brother wearing his.

We have tried putting Teddies etc on the potty, reading stories etc... but to no avail.

I realise it really is early days but I envisage a nightmare in front of us...I feel added pressure as he will start pre-school in Sept and where we live in Spain they HAVE to be dry.

Any suggestions...?

Let him sit on the potty with his clothes on for a while untill he gets used to it. Mabe at bath time suggest sitting on the potty when he has no clothes on and then it wont seem you are taking off the nappy especially.

Dont force him you will do more damage than good. All in their own time (unfortunately!). And believe me I know.

Hi RoRomammy and thanks!

It´s funny you mentioning bathtime as I did just that with him this evening and he did sit on the potty (YAY) I was so encouraged and made a big big fuss of him!
I am under no ilusions he´ll want to do the same again tomorrow though Smile

I'm sort of toying with the idea of potty training DS (2.4 yrs) as he can tell me when he's peeing and pooing in his nappy, but can't tell me before he goes, but I think that will come soon.

I've taken him out of nappies and now put pull ups on him, with cotton pants over the top just to get him used to the idea of wearing pants. Not sure if that is the right thing, but he seems to not mind (or notice).

However, if I put the potty on the floor and remind him that it's there he gets worked up and annoyed, will point at it and say, "no potty no!" and will whine a bit.

He also won't even entertain the idea of the normal toilet with the insert seat in it.

I think maybe he isn't ready, but I'd like him to be! OP, I can see why you'd want/need him to be ready for starting nursery in Sept, my driving force is I'm due DC2 in August and I'd like DS to be out of nappies by then...

Hi Needles

Unfortunately I have to be honest and say we are getting absolutely nowhere Sad

After the "progress" of him sitting on the potty after bath time we were right back to sqaure one the following day. I managed to leave him without a nappy yesterday but fully clothed so of course he just peed on the floor and then cried and cried.

Even worse, today he is back with the nappy on. He was so upset when I removed it this morning that I caved in - oh dear

I am wondering like you Needles if he´s just not ready yet despite him being 3 but I am so worried about September that I know I just can´t leave it...
