Buddhism for a newbie

I’m considering going to the local Buddhist centre but not sure what to expect and wondered whether there’s anyone who practices Buddhism or can give any advice.

Would it be weird for me to suddenly start going? I would imagine the place to be welcoming but is it?

I used to watch YT videos of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia (particularly ajahn brahm) and found his talks so relaxing, grounded and helpful. I suppose I imagine going to similar falls. I also want to work on my mediation.

I’ve recently started doing yoga, with some
Mediation, and found it’s done my mental health the world of good after a tough few months.

You might find this thread useful. Hope you find something that feels right to you. There is a lot of variation in groups and their dynamics and beliefs. My local Buddhist centre has a slightly weird vibe (felt a tint bit cultish and follows Tibetan which as a style of this tradition which is a bit fancy for me, I like the simple Hinayana versions) that put me off and I'm very sympathetic to Buddhism.
Don't be put off if your local place doesn't float your boat, keep searching.

Buddhism has many teachers, threads and traditions which have branched from the original source.

Good luck finding something that you feel is in accord with you.

Above all it is (like the Dalai Lama says) all about kindness and compassion and the ability to gently let go of what brings us pain and suffering. May it be so for you!

I am just reading a lovely book about two American ladies on pilgrimage in Japan - very much enjoying their traveller's tales of temples ('A Pilgrimage in Japan: The 33 Temples of Kannon') and the lovely people they meet on the way.
