What kind of bible for a first time reader?

Evening all

I haven’t looked at a Bible since school; but I keep feeling the need to have one, to read one and to be familiar with one

My knowledge of religion is basic.. and I don’t want a Bible that is hard to read either

Any suggestions? I’ve made myself sound like an idiot

You could try 'The Book of God' which is the Bible written in the format of a novel by Walter Wangerin . If you want something more normal try 'The Message ' or ' The Good News Bible'.

The ESV is another contemporary version, very readable. Have you thought about where to start reading? If you're not very familiar with it, I'd recommend one of the gospels (biographies of Jesus - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). Mark is the shortest!

New living bible is a good option, or a new king James. Stay away from novelized trash, it is not the Word of God.

Like others have said ESV is good. Also CSB or NOT. It may help to get a good study bible so you have an explanation of things you may not understand.

If you Google Bible Gateway, it will give you any passage in the Bible in a variety of translations. You could try reading part of one of the gospels in a few different translations and see what suits.

DS had a Hands On Bible recommended by his vicar at bible study class, he was 12 at the time and it gives examples of how to interpret the chapters for modern life.

I like the NIV bible, it's what we use in church. I have a study bible which has lots of useful extras to help you understand what you are reading. When I'm reading a passage I use bible gateway or youversion to read it in a couple of different translations, to get a better understanding of what I'm reading.
Personally, I'm not a fan of The Message, some passages are good but I wouldn't use it as my main bible.

Original poster. I'm having a clear out. I'm trying to hone what I study in the bible.

To get to the point if you're willing to give me your address I will post you a bible and a study guide I have for getting to know Jesus.

I have 3 bibles spare 1 NIV 1NLT 1X ESV.

I think any would be suitable for a beginner. I don't want anything for it.

Also to anyone else I am willing to send any of the other bibles to anyone interested in learning.

I only have 1 study guide though. So first come first get.

My main bible is NIV, the same translation we use in church.

If you want a quick overview to the main events, I recommend the Lion Children's Bible. It's written at upper primary level. You can whizz through it and then have a good idea of where everything fits together.

Sorry to hijack, but I have been considering getting a bible, I have never read one in my life, never been to church, but have for a long time being feeling drawn to finding out more, I think I have always believed in "something" but I dont know what. I did think of getting a childrens bible, I will take a look, thanks for the tip

It’s the four gospels (NLT) divided up so you read few chapters a day with an extra page info about those chapters beforehand.
