Well one thing you should know is that they're not called 'Retrievers' for nothing - our girl is very very orally fixated and will put anything and everything in her mouth. She used to chew everything in sight and still chews anything left outside , although I have to say that thankfully she no longer chews the skirting boards (oh yes she did!!)

They are so beautiful and soft and ours always looks as though she's smiling

They are very easy to train but one thing where we went wrong is not enforcing her training on the lead, so she does pull quite hard and the children have no chance of holding her. Totally our fault though as we only had to go to the top of the road before we let her off the lead, so didn't concentrate on on-lead walking. She's fantastic off the lead though - has a great return and 'herds' our children, she actually frets if one of the children has gone out of sight, Bless her.

They are a wonderful breed, truly they are, so gentle and kind. You have so made the right choice

I have two male Golden Retrievers - 18months and 4 and they are a delight. However agree about the oral fixation, lead pulling and child herding (oldest one always stays with youngest child - whoever that is!). Both mine have done bronze good citizen scheme so can walk nicely but only when tired - took the test after a very long walk. A harness is good.

My tip is to get a crate, and training classes.

Have fun!
