doggie - worming side effects??

Hello,

Quick opinions please??

Our rescue lurcher came to live with us on Saturday. On Sunday he passed a worm in his poo. The vet gave us worming tablets yesterday morning, doggie had one with his lunch and since then has had diarrhoea and is now a bit lethargic and less interested in his food than normal (he has eaten and drunk something now though).

Is this a normal reaction to a worming tablet?? I've never owned a dog before, so I've never wormed one before, so would appreciate opinions! Will ring vet later if he's still not himself but in the meantime what do you good people think???

Are there worms in his diarrhoea? My dogs are usually fine when wormed, but when one of mine was a puppy he picked up worms and when we wormed him he vomited worms up and they were in his faeces, he was also a bit under the weather - although he didn't go off his food - but he is food obsessed! I spoke to the vets and they said to worm him again a few days later as he must have had a high worm burden, he was fine that time. I'd give your vets a ring, he may need worming again.

Yup, loads of worms came out yesterday evening. Yum yum. I have another tablet to give him in a month; we're seeing the vet again next week for vaccinations so I'll check with him then about whether we should maybe do it sooner.

He's picked up in the last couple of hours, had some lunch and a bit of a play so I think it was just a reaction to the tablet. Diarrhoea seems to have stopped thank goodness!

Wish the vet had warned me though!

It isn't a usual reaction to worming no, but not impossible either. Dogs moving onto new homes especially where there are diet changes often do have a short term tummy upset that will resolve.

Thank you beautifulgirls, I'm relieved to hear that this won't necessarily happen every time he's wormed.

You're right, he's had a lot of changes in the last few days, diet etc., and been pretty stressed too I'm sure so I suppose a few poorly poos are hardly surprising.

Onwards and upwards!

If the dog does have worms then the reaction to the wormer may be greater. I wouldn't worry yet but obviously if it doesn't settle down go back to your vets.

Is he having the same food as he did before he came to you. If that has changed it is almost certain to upset a dogs stomach
Even a change in the water can upset some dogs.

So all the upheaval he has had could easily be causing the problem.

Thanks minimu, he's still rather juicy around the rear but his behaviour is changing now, he's becoming more lively and puppyish so I think he's relaxing into his new life.

Fingers crossed it will all improve as he de-stresses. He certainly doesn't seem to be ill.

If he still has tummy issues even now change him onto chicken/white fish/rice for a few days until things settle down, then very gradually start to mix in the dog food a little at a time with the chicken mix so his tummy has a slow adjustment back over. Phase out the chicken/rice mixture as you increase the proportion of dog food. It may just be the new food is not suiting him too and you might need to try a few brands before you do find one that works. Always get things settled before you bring in something new and do it gradually - chicken/rice again each time if necessary. James Wellbeloved is often a well tollerated brand of dog food by dogs with sensitive tummies so you may like to consider that if things do not work out initially?

was it milbemax? Gave my dog runs for days
Took 6 days before she settled
Do not feed after lunchtime to avoid night soiling for a few days
I did rice diet nothing helped...
Use a diff wormer next time! I will be as we had panacur previous and she was fine on it.

Wow, thanks, yes, it was Milbemax. That's very interesting. I'll definitely speak to the vet about maybe having a different type for the second dose.

And, Piffle, his food is James Wellbeloved, recommended by the lady at the dog rescue. I'll maybe switch to the chicken/rice if there's no botty-related improvement tomorrow.
