My neighbour's cat has had a surprise litter of kittens, and since our elderly cat died last year, we have been thinking of getting another cat. We've got our previous two from rescue centres, so know very little about getting a cat from kittenhood.
My worry is that one of the kittens' fathers could be one of the many feral strays around here who are most likely unvaccinated and may carry infection which may have been passed on to the kittens? I don't know whether mum is vaccinated either, only that she got pregnant before neighbour had a chance to spey her. Does transmission of infection work like this? Our old cat died of cancer and the vet said that she had been more susceptible to it as she had suffered badly with cat flu in her early life before being brought to the rescue, and so had compromised immunity for life .
