stopping a new dog going upstairs

we have recently got a 9 month labrador, who we don;t want to go upstairs. She was allowed to go upstairs in her previous home and keeps darting past the blocked stairway. Any ideas on how to train her not to go upstairs? thanks

don;t really want to use a stari gate, had one on for enough years with the kids, just got rid of it a year ago. Any ideas of training her not to go up?

persistence and consitency are the only things that will help (and maybe a treat or two!)
Each time the pup wants to dash upstairs, you take her back down and tell her stay (show her a flat hand) and keep repeating - walk up one step and if she stays - give her a treat - if she doesn't, then take her back to the bottom of the stairs and start again - she will catch on eventually.

You can get stairgates that you don't need to screw into the wall. I know it seems a step backwards if you've only just got rid of one but it might be easiest!

thanks, today is the first day she has waited at the bottom of the stairs for me. could be onto something new. She has tried to go up once, but came down immediately when I shouted no. thanks i think perseverence may just work.. now onto the kids...

a flat hand in front of a kiddie nose can work just as well
