Petitions and activism

Why on earth are so few parents signing the petition to reopen schools?

I am disgusted that children are shut of schools currently. The priority seems to be opening non essential shops and football. Our children are being failed. I am wondering why on earth are so few signatures on the petition to reopen schools? We should be matching on Westminster, not taking this! I can see less than 5000 signatures....

Most schools in England are already open. Schools in Scotland are on summer holidays.

Pretty irrelevant when your children are banned from the premises.

Jaysis you were all signing a petition to close the bloody schools a few weeks back - be careful what you wish for 😂

I was looking for a petition like this earlier today via Google, and found nothing. I think it needs more publicity somehow.

Given that there is.a predicted second wave in the autumn and a possible 2021 wave I would rather the focus was on all children being educated properly remotely.

So that means you can’t do something like sign a petition to help other children? Confused

Just looked at the petition and it isn't v well written. Only a very small opening paragraph with not enough info. And the title doesn't really contain words people would be searching for. Earlier today, I searched things like "petition all children return school September".

What solution to you proposed for shielded children?

For that needs to come in at the same time, for the most vulnerable and isolated really must not take an educational hit as well

(Will sign anyway though).

As I'm a key worker, mine have been eligible to go in the whole time. I haven't sent them once.
I don't want them passing the virus to their father and killing him, thanks.

Because there are a lot of people who don't want to awns their kids back yet
As only way to EE open fully would be back to normal , no social distancing etc and many have chose not to send them with current measures
Also a fair few teachers who wouldn't go back of back to normal due to
Shielding or just not wanting to

Perhaps a lot of parents are more cautious than you realise.

@Kaptenkrusty yes it was appropriate to lockdown then, to slow the spread and prevent NHS being overwhelmed . The NHS hasn’t been overwhelmed and so , now we need to open up. The children languishing at home for months while unessential shops open is nothing short of disgraceful. The schools should be top priority. The advice should be to socially distance where you can eg a supermarket, don’t socially distant where you can’t, eg a school. The children are being damaged in terms of education but also social development and psychological well- being. Please sign the petition. Please write to your MP

I don't want schools fully open, no.
I want them to be open in a safe way and that means part-time for all pupils, which most people don't want.
Makes far more sense to have two days a week than no days, but apparently not...

@LittleCabbage do you think We should start a new petition, clearly stating the points made?

I'll sign.

I had to tell two of mine today they couldn't go back this term. They were expecting it but my 8 year old is so sad.

Home learning, however good, is no substitute whatsoever. They need interaction with friends.

And judging from the huge numbers of older children in parks, I think they would be safer in school too.

This current situation is no more than 100's or 1000's of children experience under normal circumstances. Individual parents and groups fight for a SEND child to receive an education in so many cases.

All that is happening right now is the rest of the school population is getting a taste of what these parents and students put up with on a regular basis.

I want the schools open. Im very worried about my kids especially my year 10 dd. However I'll be happy when they open because scientists have decided it is safe to do so for children and staff. I would certainly sign a petition for the Dept of Education to come up with a standardised online education for everyone so that they go back in a similar place with their learning and not this complete shambles where some kids are having proper interaction with teachers and are learning new content and some are getting virtually nothing.

Because I think it is too early for schools to open safely.

I realise that will be an unpopular answer, though.
