Hello there everybody and Happy New Year to you all.

I am prepared for all of the hate that I might get for this, I have already received some backlash, for which I was totally prepared for, but this is something that I feel needs to be tried.

I have created the following petition in a bid to close our supermarkets on Boxing Day & New Years Day and I am hoping that you will help me in getting this to Parliament for consideration for the 2020 Festive period.(failing that, at least to be talked about promised to be put into action at some point - as these things take time to organise).

Answering some questions that will probably be raised on this:

  • Why not create a petition for workers rights, so that if an employee doesn't wish to work on these days, they shouldn't have to and will not be frowned upon, and their job will not be at risk.

-- We could do this, but we all know that employers have a way around things, and whilst they may make it seem "alright" they know, that as you didn't go out of your way, they shouldn't need to in the future....

  • I was out over the holiday period and saw many people out and about shopping, so they is clearly a demand for the shops to be open

-- Yes, I agree, but we are talking supermarkets and the like, can we not food shop in advance?

  • And this is how shops end up going out of business

-- Not the supermarket chains, they are a steady source of income for the supermarket giants

  • What about the people who don't celebrate Christmas

-- Just because somebody doesn't celebrate Christmas, there is no reason why they shouldn't have the same rights as everybody else in the UK.

  • Oh but its OK for NHS staff to have to work on Christmas day

-- I cannot stress enough how much it is appreciated for NHS staff, Emergency Services, Care Staff etc to be working on these days, but you have to remember that, these people are looking after others, but Supermarket Checkout staff, shouldn't have to be on the beck and call of our greed, of having to "pop to the shop", when we could be doing this in advance.

There are far more explanations and answers for the above statements, but, if I answered each one fully, this could go on for pages.

It all comes down to, if you believe in the cause or not and if you do, please take the time to sign and share, but if you don't, I wont be offended for you moving on.

Thanks for reading.
