On rare occasions 'thar' (as in 'thar she blows') permissable but only if poster has spent at least 12 months esablisher her syntactic credentials.

So there.

Cheesesarnie .. it is easy just repeatedly look at title and think when you use the word.

Today Cheesesarnie .. tomorrow the world!

I have my own blind spot with who's and whose (as many pedants know) and try to think when I use them.

can anyone remind me about the correct usage of whose and who's?

Report
MrsSplat · 20/10/2008 22:44

I know very well too; but once cocked up in crawly unproof-read email to my CEO .

I'll never:

  1. crawl by email
  2. fall foul of there/their

Again

Who's knocking on my door?
Whose shoes are these?

Who's is only ever = who is

Right?

Report
edam · 20/10/2008 22:51

Oh good, I knew that! Just had a moment of self-doubt.

I know that! Why do I keep getting them wrong then?

Apparently, there's a typing thing too in that you tend to use the easiest one for typing. There/their being a classic exmaple. I think who's/whose is one too.

So you don't make the mistake in writing, but on the keyboard you do.

In DD's Y2 classroom a couple of years ago - a printed glossy card poster saying:

"Who's birthday is it?"

Oh gosh yes.
'Your' is my pet hate. I wish I could spend the whole day sat online frequenting different talk boards saying you+re=you're
