Pedants' corner

I corrected another sign

I went to my new GP. They had a sign in reception saying that "some criteria's of people are exempt from prescription charges".

Even with the 's removed it's still a horrible sentence but less obviously painful!

But criteria is the plural of criterion and as you say the whole sentence is mangled.

Are they trying to say: "Some categories of people are exempt from prescription charges"? or "People who meet certain criteria are exempt from prescription charges"?

Both of those sentences would convey what they were trying to say, yes.

I'm not sure what annoyed me more, the attempt to pluralise a plural or the belief that to pluralise requires an apostrophe.

I'm going back a week today. Will see if it's been changed

I'll wait for your post in a week's time along the lines of...

The GP has diagnosed a case of acute pedantry and prescribed a course of apostrophes to be taken after meal's Grin

I thought the op was taking the piss with the 'your' thing.

The your was defiantly done on porpoise

I thought it was obvious that OP was deliberately using "your" rather than "you're" in humorous response to the two previous posts that obviously jokingly misused apostrophes. (In my case, I put a Grin after "meal's" earlier, just to prove I was joking).

Muphry's Law does often strike pedants, it's true.

They're were several spoof typo posts.

Just to confirm "your" was definitely a joke as most have identified.

They reprinted the sign and we have "criteria's" again.

I corrected it again.

Did they still miss out the apostrophe on charges?
