I find "Northern Island" instead of Northern Ireland irritating too. The R is not meant to be silent! And loch being pronounced "lock", as if it's part of a canal.

I asked the kids if they wanted 'sangers' for lunch the other day. They didn't know what I was talking about. I don't know where it came from either, although if it's Australian it's possible that it entered my brain during an episode of Neighbours/Home and Away back in the 80s and has been lurking there ever since.
