NICHE - pronounced Nitch, Neesh, or Nish?

I would always pronounce it "neesh", as it's a French word.

I just read that Merriam-Webster lists the other pronunciations as also being correct. I believe that the US prefers "nitch", whilst the UK is more likely to pronounce it "neesh".

Which one do you use?

Neesh. Wouldn't have occurred to me there are other pronunciations - but then I thought that about the word almond.

Definitely 'neesh'.

I usually say 'cleek' but do occasionally say 'click' if I'm being dergatory.

I am guilty of saying click, think it's because of all the American high school films I watched growing up.

On this subject I worked with a man who pronounced calibre as cal-ee-bray. It is cal-ai-ber, isn't it?!

The only times I heard it spoken it was 'neech'. (Only twice, don't move in those circles)

Call-EE-bray would be a Spanish-style pronunciation. It's definitely not call-EYE-ber (we say that as a joke in my family). Calliber with emphasis on the first syllable is most common. And neesh for me - but Americans have always pronounced French words in their own way so nitch is fine if you're American. Maybe nitch is more West Coast?
