I just snapped, I'm afraid, and did something which may be regarded as a little OTT!

Full two page ad in our local paper concerning the Christmas market, which is run by the Council. Big banner across the top, containing, in quite large print, the opening hours - e.g '10.00 am to 8.00 pm on Thursday's' Six aberrant apostrophes in total!!

I have emailed the council person charged with overseeing all things Christmas market related and complained that it looks unprofessional, and am happy to offer my services as a proofreader. She's going to think I'm one of 'those' people, isn't she? Blush

(I just told ds2, who definitely thinks I'm one of 'those' people Grin)

DH once received a letter from his bank referring to 'PIN numbers' multiple times. He wrote back to point out the error in a humorous way. They sent a case of wine to him for his efforts!

I've just seen there's a reply in my inbox! Wuss that I am, I'm too scared to open it! Gah! (Bet it won't be offering me a case of wine, or a proofreading job!)

Come on don't keep us in suspense! What does the email say? Misusing apostrophes drives me mad, particularly when they're added into plural words. Why why why?!

Lovely email, actually! Agreed with me that grammar is very important (former English teacher, apparently!), and the rogue apostrophes weren't in the copy which was prepared, but she doesn't get to vet everything immediately before it goes to print.

She also bemoaned having had to correct an entire article that a reporter had written and sent to her for approval, and speculates that the local paper doesn't recruit on the basis of competency in English any longer!

Feel a bit guilty now, as it sounds like the paper was at fault.

So, op, contact the local paper and offer to do subbing/proofreading for them! Sounds like they need help!
