If it is short for it is then yes.

Its is correct as you are talking about the object - as in his or her.

It's means it is.

'Its' is a possessive pronoun, like 'His' or 'her'.

'It's' is short for 'it is' or 'it has'.

No apostrophe, IT'S is a contraction of IT IS. Say the sentence with it is..you'll then know if you need an apostrophe or not.

I teach my students to ask if they could replace "its" with "his" or "her". If you could, it's a possessive its so doesn't need an apostrophe.

So: the dog chased its tail/the dog chased her tail: no apostrophe needed.
