Pedants' corner

I removed two apostrophies....

... from boards outside two shops when I was visiting daughter in Aberdeen.

I was very subtle, she stood in the way so I could do a quick swipe (whiteboards). Made my day because often I cannot access these little blighters to remove them.

It is so glaringly obvious that they should not be there. Sometimes official signage has them! Aaarrgghhh!

Excellent, well done.

I have been known to do this myself.

In Devon, over the summer, I rubbed out an entire 'inflateables' from a blackboard outside a shop.

Isn't it apostrophe(s)?!

Two apostrophes in one day; that is very impressive. I did that once in my son's school on parents' night and managed to smear the ink and got caught. There is a technique to it, and it definitely helps to have an accomplice. Smile

With fear of outing myself, this must be said:

There is a sandwich shop that I drive past on occasion, and the use of apostrophe makes me any to the point of almost causing criminal damage to eradicate it; it is on the signage over the shop, on the window panes, and elsewhere so I can't just wipe it off. It is:

Suttons Snax's.

Yep. That is right, it is not a typo on my part.

There's an it's near me that I would like to deal with. May require tipex and the cover of night though.

Is it a trap or should I point out that there's a typo on that web page???

Report
MirandaGoshawk · 25/09/2013 21:30

That article is brilliant. But what's the typo - just a speech mark missing from in front of 'which'? Couldn't see any others not that I looked very hard, you understand.

prism · 25/09/2013 21:36

Yes that's it. But I do wonder if it's a trap for the over-zealous pendant. (Can there be such a thing?)

It's benign though. Think of it as like train spotting or stamp collecting. Should there be hyphens in there?
