I am throwing my sons 1st birthday party in August. I thought it would be nice to have wine for the adults who will be there (approx 27). I am however on a tight budget so dont want to over or under buy. How many bottles of wine do you think I would need for everyone to be able to have 2 glasses? thanks!

How big a glass will you give them?

About 18. I think you get 3 glasses per bottle. I'd buy 20 to be sure (or a couple of boxes!)

Between 4 and 6 glasses to a bottle.

Therefore 12 - 14 bottles (or how about buying a wine box or 2?)

officially I think there are 6 glasses per bottle (that's 175 ml glasses so quite small), so , um, 1 bottle will do 3 people and 9 bottles should do all 27...

Gosh MamaG - you have big glasses

Standard wine bottle is 75cl, standard wine glass measure is 125ml (small measure i pub or restuarant) therfore 6 small glasses to the bottle. Better to assume 4 glasses as at least then you won't feel stingy!

One bottle has 750 ml. One small glass has 175 ml, a larger glass has 250 ml. So 2x175 ml=350 ml, or 2x250 ml=500 ml per person. Times this with 27 then divide by 750ml per bottle and you get the number of bottles.

Nine bottles will give you 54 125ml glasses, however that's a rather mean measure (think small round pub wine glasses). Thirteen bottles gives you more than 54 175ml glasses, and obviously it'd have to be eighteen to give you two big (250ml) glasses per person. That's quite a lot of wine (ooh, listen to me) to be drinking at a birthday party though, for a lot of people! If the budget is that tight I'd be included to go for the nine bottles, pour medium size glasses and hope not too many come back for seconds.

Aren't some of the guests going to drive and so drink less or not at all?

If you buy from Tescos - they do Sale or return

Cava is nice (& cheapish)

Buy more than you need and lock 3/4 bottles away - to get out ONLY if you run out

Buy some smaller glasses and 9 bottles.

Don't open all bottles at once and return any unopened to the shop.

oh they're great

i've had them for years, bought them from Ikea about 11 years ago and they're great. Quite plain, but huge and v tough.

When we go to other people's houses, I wonder if they've given me a child's glass by mistake and wonder why DH is glaring at me, as I sit with my empty glass, mouthing "what?" at him!

As it's going to be in the summer, why not do white wine spritzers? It'll make the wine go further, and be nice and cooling too. You mix half and half white wine and soda water, make sure it's all chilled properly and it's not good at room temperature.

I find that wine isn't all that popular at daytime things with kids anyway. Most people seem to go for soft drinks or bottled beer.

LOL Mama G!
My DH's friend (likes to 'entertain') serves his wine in huge chardonnay glasses, but only fills them about a quarter way up. Proper wine etiquette apparently.
He has got in the habit of leaving the wine on the table instead of returning to the fridge so that he doesn't have to keep getting up for refills.

Thank you for all your answers. On further thought I am thinking wine is too expensive.

I was thinking of doing some sort of cocktail. Nice and easy. Do you know what a summer breeze is? Its cranberry juice and orange juice together. I was thinking something like that but with a dash of vodka or something in it would be much
cheaper to make. Do any of you know of tasty cocktails? I dont like the taste of vodka much but I like drinks like Reef.

MamaG - Our glasses are 250ml ones too. We also have some that hold half a bottle

Eenybeeny - Pimms and lemonade is an old traditional, or Martini and lemonade tho it might be a bit dated. Are you sure people will want to drink at the party?
