baby has temp of 39.3

he was fine this am, but has slept all day.we assumed he was tired so left him to catch up, then it got 2 5pm he cried when i picked him up as if i was hurting him.he was dripping in sweat so checked his temp it was 39.3,took him walk in centre, they gave him calpol and waited 20mins, it stayed the same.they said he's got sore ears and throat and to dose him up with calpol every 4hours.the problem is-temp hasnt come down at all, ive stripped him off and have the doors open he seems to be panting to try and cool down.im extremely worried & dont know what 2do next?

what age is he? You can alternate with childrens ibuprofen with the calpol if he is over 3 months

I'd call NHS Direct - 0800 484950 and ask them. Much better than waiting for a reply from a load of people with dubious medical qualifications on the internet.

How old is he? I would phone NHS direct for advise, they're usually pretty good. I would be a little concerned about the panting- does he seem short of breath at all?

he's 8months, very floppy.normally so so smiley and laughs at everything.today-not even a grin just wanted to make sure i wasnt wasting anyones time, they just gonna tell me 2give him more calpol etc.

breathing pattern is holding his breath for couple of seconds then pants.then repeats.

If he's old enough for Ibuprofen give both calpol and Ibuprofen together. The Ibuprofen prolongs the effectivness of the calpol. Is he drinking enough?

Well they may tell you to try alternating with ibuprofen and seeing if that helps. But they won't treat you like you're wasting their time so you've got nothing to lose. If you're really worried, just take him to paediatric A&E

Sorry, but he needs to be checked, there are several flags there for meningitis. Can you get there by yourself? If not, ring 999 imo.

Take him to A&E. Don't bother with NHS Direct. Sorry for crap advice and for giving you the number for rail enquiries instead of NHS Direct!

You'll never be wasting anyones time when it comes to a babies health. If you'd rather be seen in person ring your gp and find out about the out of hours service,

Hope it is just ear infection etc but ALWAYS best to get checked.

If you have concerns like this and your baby is floppy, I would take him to A&E.

Forget about worrying about wasting peoples time, I work in a hospital and they will not mind whatsoever about if he has a common-or-garden bug.

Take him in your car to your nearest out of hours service. If you ring your GP usual number there should be a message giving you the number of this service. Call them and they will prioritise you. Tell them you want to be seen.

If your baby is sweating and has been sleeping all day there is a good chance he could become dehydrated which is serious.

His temp is quite high, though could be worse, but the possible dehydration is a concern.

You are not wasting anyones time if all turns out to be fine which is the most likely outcome.

Don't panic at all, but make a move to get him checked out by a doctor asap.

morning mumsnetters!thank you all for reply's last night. took him to A&E and they did a mass of tests, including blood checking for the dreaded meningitis but luckily all is good,(though trying 2catch his wee in a pot was a right challenge and a half!!) took until 3am before his temp came down from 39.3 to 37.9.his throat apparently is very red, and glands are very swollen so he is just feeling rough!he's still the same this am, sleepy and quiet but temp not as high thank goodness!!
