ds's friend is a myth buster!

ds i 5 and has just lost his first tooth.He was so giddy and excited about the tooth fairy coming, it was just a delight.
Anyway his friend came to play today and my ds showed him the certificate the tooth fairy brought him. The friend then came up to me and said ' there is no tooth fairy- it's your parents'. I just looked at him, my mind was racing so i said' who told you that? he said his brother had and i said ' i don't think thats true'.
he then went over to ds and told him! ds just flashed me this look- like is he telling me the truth?? what is going on?
i could have killed this kid!!!
another friend came later and her ds was telling mine that the tooth fairy brought him a certifiacate etc. don't know what he thinks now.
just really annoyed that his innocence is being ruined at so early an age.what do the rest of you think? how should i have handled it?

Tell him that if he doesn't believe in the tooth fairy she might stop coming.

It kept me believing in Santa until I was 9!

i actually hid a lapland brochure while he was here in case he started telling stories about father christmas!

Tell him the tooth fairy doesnt come to those who dont believe and that his parents have to cough up.

i just think its dead sad that at 5 this kid is so lacking in imagination and magic.i don't want my child to be like that.there is enough horrible reality in the world as it is- let them have dreams.

I don't think its lacking in imagination- its just having older siblings. My friend told me father xmas was fake when I was 6 (she had an older brother). I didn't believe her though- my parents told me he didn;t come to those who didn't believe. I believed until the year my mother woke me up pissed bringing my presents into the room "oh god no Stuart (my uncle) I couldn't have another drink- you drink it- who wants the mince pie?"

When I was little the tooth fairy came into my bedroom and I was actually awake. I was absolutely terrified. I was so scared that I pretended to be asleep so I never actually saw the fairy - just heard the door open and 10p get placed under my pillow. I never told my parents. To this day it is still one of the most terrifying experiences I've ever been through.

I tell my kids the truth about tooth fairies and santa but I also tell them that other people believe them to be true and that they should let them find out for themselves when they are old enough to understand better

I would NOT be happy with my children if they told believing children the 'truth'. So far it has not happened.
