Parents of sunhat-hating babies, any way of keeping one on?

DS is 10 months and since he has been able to pull one off has absolutely hated wearing hats (he wasn't too thrilled with winter hats either - used to cry even in his sleep when I put one on him, but didn't seem to mind if it was cold and the hat made him warm) I have tried the type which fasten under the chin and he gets even more frustrated with these and alternately screams and tries to pull them off.

However he has really thick hair and suncreaming his head doesn't work We had a lovely day outdoors today but he has caught the sun a bit and I feel terrible! It is only on his face/head so would have been prevented by a hat. He likes to crawl a lot as well so not always possible to keep him in the shade though I generally do as much as possible, just didn't think today as we were having such a lovely time.

Try sewing on some ties and tie it under his chin. Won't stay on all day but usually gives them pause.

and certainly suncream his face - you can do cheekbone / nose / forehead stripes even on a wriggler

No, I hate hats too! So I can't blame him really, I am such a hypocrite but he is so fussy, he even hates hoods on things being up, unless it's really cold.

Have tried tying under the chin. I have one with ties and one with velcro straps - both last about 30 seconds longer than a hat without, with added furious screaming.

I did put suncream on his face but probably didn't reapply often enough.

I haven't tried baseball-cap-style hats but thinking that would be better than nothing. Has anyone had success this way? I have only tried wide brimmed ones so far.

I am assuming it gets easier when I can do the bribe/threat thing ie you are not allowed in the sun without a hat on full stop.

My son is like this, was hard but as he's got older I've been able to convince him to wear one by lying telling him it's a train drivers hat....

yy, get a shadey thing for the pushchair - then the choice is Hat or Pushchiar

and not sure if it will work on a ds but dd (now 2) was coerced by telling her it was a pretty hat and getting all spectators to swoon with delight at her beauty as she appeared in it

these days she often chooses to wear a hat regardless of the weather
however she is a hood refusenik so we have one of these for rain.

distraction - might take 2 of you - one shoves hat on, then holds baby's hands and distracts like mad for as long as it takes for baby to forget hat is on

otherwise you're looking at - shadeababe for pushchair - uv tents for beach - and staying out of the sun

they will learn from a very early age if you're really serious about the hat going on or not. (sometimes it's easier to just stay out of the sun though)

Not sure he would understand "hat or pushchair" though, he is just like WTF is this thing on my head??

Probably should cut down on the playing peepo by putting a muslin on his head for him to pull off, I bet this comes from that! I like the swooning at hat idea though, he is vain and loves attention and posing. I'm just not sure it would stay on long enough to be swooned at! Will have a go tomorrow.
