Does anyones child have a strange reaction to a toy?

My 4 year old son has a really strange reaction to his younger sister's glo worm toy. When he hears the music he becomes really quiet and then suddenly he starts to sob uncontrollably saying it makes his tummy hurt. He's never reacted like this to anything before.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this or has anyone got any idea why he might react like this? It seems really strange to me!
Thanks in anticipation.

Think you've probably hit the nail on the head, he is very sensitive . But still didn't think he'd react like that to something! x

my dd1 used to go mad at rainmakers. She would scream her head off if she heard one, or even looked at one.

DS1 had a singing book that he was really upset by. He would scream, a horrible frightened scream until it was put away. It's come out again now for DS2, and DS1 told me that he didn't used to like that book when he was tiny, but it's okay now!

Sounds like its not all that unusual for this sort of response then, I'm relieved. Thank you!

My ds1 had a tall skinny rabbit that he used to beat the living daylights out of. When he was older he told me that the rabbit being bigger than him was like a big brother.

omg this has just reminded me
I have this doll Boo (from monsters inc) and when you press her tummy she talks and sings.
anyway when ds1 was little we showed it to him and every time she sang the song she does he was absolutely distraught!

he also used to scream and hide at a book about Mr Croc

My dd1 was petrified of cuddly toy animals ...they reduced her to a quivering wreck in seconds!

Also dolls like Annabel or Chou chou, the ones that make noises or cry - put the absolute fear of God into her! Bless.

My dd hates dolls with a passion! Tells mummy to "put it away". She does, however, love her crocodile hand puppet that was originally intended for her cousin (who's a boy); but he was petrified of it, so much so that when he was first given it he was sitting on my mum's lap, and someone came towards him with it on their hand and he bit my mum in fear! My poor mum had a huge bite mark on the top of her arm.

My dd was more than happy to swap the cuddly giraffe puppet she was given for the crocodile! It proves that you can't always genderdise toys.

willem- what is the tune?
Some music has a 'magic' combination of notes, that evokes tears in us... see 'godel, escher and bach'

There are various tunes, all familiar - twinkle, twinkle etc plus others I don't recognise. All in a classical style, so the combination thing could be heading in the right direction with regards to the reaction.

DD (at about 9 months) used to be really scared of a walking Winnie The Pooh bear she got for christmas. She used to crawl away so fast in terror, crying her eyes out. After that I took the batteries out but she still looked terrified if she ever saw it, even when she was about 2.5 years old.

my mom has a door stop which looks like a rag doll boy holding the door, when dd saw it she shouted no and kicked him in the head, every time she went she would kick him as she passed.

DD was given a lamb bok for easter which has one of those buttons which makes it bleat - she was fine with it until she heard it bleat now eveytime it comes out the toybox and she sees it she cries histerically until we put it out of sight.

My DD is terrified of pop-ups in books. She looks at them the way I would look at a live adder in my bed.
