Hey....

So my now 15 month old has always had a few tummy troubles. I breastfed him for 5 months but had to stop as he was sick after every feed.. so something I was eating wasn't agreeing with him. Once he went onto formula he was much better and it stopped. But now he is on cow's milk he poos about 5-6 a day and the smell is horrific and making his bum sore. Could he be Lactose intolerant? and if so what could I give him instead of the milk as he still has a bottle before bed and first thing in the morning. Should I go onto Formula again for his age group?
I just don't know what else it could be.... I feed him fruit and veg but as afamily we do all love cheese and cream sauces (althought I try not to give them to him)

Any advice would be hugely appreciated thank you.

I doubt it would be lactose related as formula contains lactose and so does breastmilk. Could be an issue with cows milk protein i suppose (lactose is the sugar in the milk). If you wanted to cut lactose just to see if it makes a difference then you can buy Lactofree cows milk which will taste the same but have the lactose removed. Its with the other milks in the supermarket

He could be but it’s very rare. It’s more likely to CMPA. It’s not completely unusual to be diagnosed with CMPA as a toddler. To test it out he needs to go dairy free (check every packet) for at least 3 weeks and then get him to drink a cup of milk. If you wanted to test lactose intolerance first then give a cup of lactose milk first and then wait a few days.

My 17 month old has lactose free milk. Arla do a whole range of lactose free dairy products. She also has Alpro soya kids yoghurts. There is only trace lactose in hard cheese so she will have small amounts of cheddar.

It's very easy for us to avoid lactose, so if you think it could make a difference then test the theory and go lactose free for a while.
