9 month old screaming and i can't stand it anymore

please no judgement, but my 9 month old ha started screaming not like usual child screaming but high pitched screaming when he wants my attention in the kitchen when i'm trying to get jobs done, it's making it so difficult for me and is actually hurting my ears, i've tried giving him stuff to distract him and it only keeps him for so long as well as gently telling him off. if i ignore it it gets worse, i feel like an awful mum but it just goes on and on and i don't know if it will go away on its own or should i teach him no?
thanks for any advice Smile

Both of mine went through this phase, its torturous but it does pass. My general approach was to ignore the screeching, and gently encourage more pleasant forms of communication. But I found i sort of had to endure it until they worked out other ways of getting their message across. Like all things with kids this age it will pass.

Can you chuck him in the sling for a bit so you can get on with things without him asking for your attention?

Mine did this every time I left the room. It eventually went away but I also put him in a baby Walker so he essentially used to follow me around chatting away to me as he just wanted to be involved or zooming around the house in it. DS2 is the same and also loves it

Mine learned how to do this at nursery. The only thing that works is time out. I put him facing the wall for 30s and he’ll stop screaming eventually - but he’s definitely doing it for the attention as he smirks at the same time.

Time out for a 9 month old baby!? I know they can be frustrating but that really isn't OK, please don't do this. Maybe talk to your HV, they can offer you classes and resources to help you if you're having trouble coping with your baby, but please don't ignore and isolate your child for really normal developmental behaviour. They have no other way to communicate with you!

I don’t think time out for 30 seconds is going to do a 9 month old any harm, what fresh hell of parenting is this??

Time out for a child that age is absolutely inappropriate, especially for something like shrieking, which is a really normal part of vocal development. They're not capable of being naughty, and so shouldn't be punished.

I don't think this is a fresh anything. It's pretty well established that you don't discipline babies, surely?

I feel your pain, last 3 days our nearly 9mo DD has started with the loud shouting, it feels like an eternity already and I am seriously considering starting to wear the earmuffs I bought for using the hammer drill, around the house.....

However I don't recall this with DS1 and if it's annoying he almost certainly did it so hopefully a short phase 🤞

P.s you are not an awful mum, it doesn't hurt to try and teach him no but I wouldn't necessarily expect results at this age

He's only 9 months old and when you look back, this time will have flown by abd the most important part of it will be your relationship with your child. He's communicating the only way he can. Can you drop your standards in your kitchen for just a couple of months and attend to him? He won't need this forever.

I agree with the PP that time out doesn't make sense. He is too young to understand.

My ds is 10.5 months and he did the blood curdling scream from about 8 months I think. It was awful! He doesn't do it now though and weirdly I was saying to dh the other day that I didn't even notice when he stopped... I just realised one day he hadn't done it for a while. It will pass, but solidarity here because it was a real pain in the ear! Xx

@GrumpyHoonMain WTF? The OP’s baby is 9 months old!

My 8 month old is the same and it’s driving me nuts. I love her more than anything in the world but sometimes I really have to breathe through the intense frustration the repetitive wailing etc causes. I know it’s her developing and learning so it’s amazing really, I am just extremely sensitive to noise (misophonia I think it’s called) so it’s extra irritating. It’s like a deep internal rage...it’s really annoying because ‘shush’ or ‘stop’ are futile. She obviously doesn’t understand, half the time she laughs or smiles because she thinks I’m playing (which is acc adorable) but I completely understand where you’re coming from. We can only look forward to when it ends I suppose!

OP's baby is over two years old now, I'm sure the screaming has stopped by nowGrin
