Packed lunches

Hi Everyone,

Would anyone mind sharing what they put in their nursery-ages child's packed lunch box?

I usually do a cheese sandwich, raisins, cocktail sausages, yoghurt, crisps.

I'm not sure how to give it more variety or make it that bit healthier!

Thanks.

I'd personally do away with the cocktail sausage and raisins, I'd give crisps every other day only (this is just me though!)

I used to do soft cheese sandwich with cucumber, tomatoes and cucumber in a little pot or strawberries and blueberries, some little fruit rice cakes and a yoghurt.

This was three days per week then when he was at home the sandwiches were usually exchanged for scrambled eggs or similar.

Now he is at school and he gets school dinners Grin

Mine are older (7&9) so maybe a bit less than this...
Sandwich, wrap or pasta. Filling is cold meat, mini sausage or cheese. Usually some lettuce or cucumber too.
Fruit.
Yoghurt or jelly.
Pack of mini biscuits, Club bar or similar. Elder DD takes a soreen bar on PEdays.

They have fruit (from school) and a cereal bar at morning break.

My youngest doesn't do sandwiches.

Chicken drumsticks, boiled egg, sausages, cheese straws or bread sticks, tangerines, grapes, blueberries, carrot sticks, biscuit.

Kids are at secondary now and they make pasta with sauce in the morning and take it in a flask.

Pretty much the same every day 😬
Marmite sandwich/ philly/hummus some days
About 10 chopped cherry tomatoes
Chopped cucumber
Olives
Lump of cheese
Chopped apple/grapes
Cold roast chicken if any leftovers
Then some sort of ‘treat’ - Slice of cake/crisps/haribo- that kind of thing

It's only twice a week and he wouldn't usually have a "packed lunch" type lunch at home.

I just try to avoid fruit (sounds like an odd comment haha) as he gets fruit as a snack mid morning while he's there.

Great idea on the boiled eggs and breadsticks! I never thought of that and it's both things he would usually eat.

Thanks everyone.

That packed lunch sounds ok. I would usually give :

  • a sandwich or wrap
  • fruit or veg sticks
  • yogurt/cheese cubes
  • sweet (kit kat/club/penguin)

Pasta, cold meat salad, wraps are all alternatives if you want a change from sandwiches.

Good thread! I do

a sandwich/bap/wrap - usually cheese, occasionally cold meat or fish paste
apple or satsuma
pot of carrot sticks or cucumber, if we have it then maybe something fancier like pomegranate or mango
occasional sweet surprise like a tiny piece of cake or mini gingerbread man
maybe the odd cracker or cheese biscuit

I don't know how long it will last, but I'm trying to avoid buying single-serving processed stuff like individual yoghurts, bars, crisps etc because they're not very nutritious, they're expensive for what they are and once you start buying them I suspect you can never stop!

Frittata might be a useful option top add some veg in! My DD loves it.
