Allergic reaction to food, nearly 7 months - monitor myself or refer to GP? Any advice appreciated, all new to me

My baby has been weaned for nearly a month, she’s taken really well to it and is up to three meals a day.

Today I tried her with scrambled egg for the first time. She started to get a blotchy rash on her head (which she also gets with yoghurt ive noticed but not cows milk eg on weetabix) and didn’t like eating it so I stopped.

She was clearly still hungry so I tried her with (for the first time 🤦‍♀️ I know I know) a pouch of tomato pasta. She seemed to like it and ate a decent amount but did come out in hives around her mouth whilst she was eating it.

She then was violently sick about a minute after and really unsettled for a good hour after. She also threw up her next bottle. She’s fine now.

So, it could be an allergy to either egg or tomato I guess as like an idiot I tried both for the first time in one go!

Any advice on how to manage it please or work out which she’s allergic to? Also do you refer to GP at such a young age? My first child had no allergies so it’s all new to me.

Take her to the GP (with photos if you can) and get referred to a paediatric allergy specialist if you can.

It could just be a reaction to something new. I work in a nursery and we have had a few that have gotten a rash and gone red around their mouth after eating egg and tomato. Its usually stops after having it a few times. I would say maybe trying her with plain egg and plain tomato to see if it happens again and then maybe speak to your GP. I would be more worried if the reaction was severe. You could also keep a diary of what she has eaten and the reaction so its evidence to take to your GP.

No need for a referral just yet. Lots of babies react to egg like that the first time. Leave it a couple of months and try again. Introduce egg as part of other things like in cakes (bad example but you get my drift!).

My little one did this the first time and 2 months later was fine.

Obviously if she gets worse see a doctor.

An immediate reaction indicates a possible iGE allergic reaction, these can get worse for subsequent exposures. I wouldn’t be monitoring that myself.

My girls have none iGE reactions and I’m happy to monitor those myself.

The blotchy rash wouldn't concern me (my 7 month old gets this with egg as well). The hives I would be more concerned about and would seek medical advice before giving either again.

Hi

So the baby was fine yesterday evening after all this, did some playing and had a weetabix.

But she didn’t wake for her night feed which is unusual for her (I did check on her but decided to let her sleep). So as a result she woke this morning with a dry nappy, from 7pm the night before.

She’s had a bottle this morning but is very quiet and a bit out of sorts. She’s had a wet nappy.

Is that normal after a reaction? I imagine it takes it out of them.

You need to contact your GP to ask for a referral to an allergy clinic.

My dc has on two occasions reacted with violent projectile vomit after eating egg. He also reacts in huge scary looking hives if he gets too hot.

If there is swelling of the eyes/ mouth or instant hives they are usually more concerned. So I would certainly contact your GP.

I'd avoid both foods for now. My allergy appointment has taken over 5 months including once cancellation due to covid so you could be waiting a while.
