How to dress baby in pram

Hi - probably a silly question but I’m a new first time mum to a nearly 3 week old and struggling slightly with being unable to see family/friends for advice, so turning to Mumsnet.

How should I be dressing my baby for our short permitted daily walk outside now that the weather is a bit warmer? (19 degrees currently in London). I get the ‘add a layer to whatever you’re wearing rule’ but unfortunately my temperature/hormones are all over the place currently so I don’t think I’m a very good human thermometer, and I naturally always have on 2 more layers than anyone else in the room.

Had previously been putting him in vest + long sleeved sleepsuit then adding fleecey pram suit for outdoors + hat (and pram bassinet has cover) but this was when the weather was quite a bit cooler. Also he is obviously not moving around when we’re out while I am working up a bit of a sweat pushing the pram up hill!

Any advice much appreciated!

Today dd is in a long sleeved vest with trousers and will have a light blanket when she goes out for our walk in a minute. So basically one layer plus blanket..

Sounds fine. Use a blanket and hat , remove whenever you go inside or baby seems warm.

In the pram yesterday my 5 week old was wearing a vest, leggings, long sleeved t-shirt, booties and then a blanket which I removed when it got sunny and popped back on when in the shade.

Definitely vest, trousers and top OR sleepsuit and a blanket which can be removed if the sun is shining and put back on in the shade

I always added one extra layer in the pram. So general rule is what you’re wearing plus one layer (usually the vest), but it’s also colder staying still in the pram than walking pushing it so I’d add one more. In this nice weather I’d prob do vest + babygro + cardi + light blanket. Check the baby’s neck (not hands) for temperature and you can always remove or double up the blanket if needed.

I feel like many mums (mainly the first time mums) are overdressing the babies, and that is as much . if not more - dangerous than the baby being cold. I usually did the layering, yes, but ayers of mostly thinner things, like 3-4 layers when cold, and then, I've put on a good cosytoes. A footmuff with layers again - like a Lodger Bunker - worked great with us. And it does fit most strollers, even the ergonomic, bucket seat pushchairs - since it's L-shaped (if not sure what I am talking about, this is a bucket seat).

Another approach is to always have a blanket or two in the basket - and to check the baby's rear part of neck to feel if it's cold. And if it's sweaty there, you know the baby is too warm.

But overall, don't overthink it and just dress the baby like others are dressed, plus the outer protection. Too warm and the baby is in danger of SIDS.
