Car seat confusion ... help!

Morning all!

I've been having a real issue with my little man since he was born in that he's just huge... he outgrown everything. Come to think of it half of the things I bought him he was too big for as a newborn

So, we have a carseat that is up to 13kg (28 lb) my son is five months old and 25lb. Not sure how tall he is at the moment but at 8 weeks he was 52 centimetres so that will give you an idea!! His head is almost touching the top of the car seat and he looks so squashed in there.

We have a britax car seat for the next one .... but that is front facing and I an under the impression babies have to be read facing until they are 9 months old?

What am I supposed to do here... can anyone advise me please??? Thank you xxx

Yes babies should be rear facing until at least 9 months old, legally, but the recommendation is rear facing for much longer, and the law is changing to make that happen.

Is your Britax car seat still in the box? Could you return/exchange it and get a rear facing seat instead?

I don't think it matters if he looks squashed as long as he is still below maximum weight and his head doesn't come over the top. My maxi cosi one had lots of extra padding that you removed as the baby grew. Have you double checked things like that? Once he really is too big have a chat with somewhere like Halfords and they can advise. I thought new car seats had to be rear facing to something like 18 months now but I may be wrong

We got this britax one given by a friend so we haven't paid anything for it, so we have it for when he's older which is good. I think I'll have to go somewhere and chat about what to do... as he's top side of 25 pounds at the moment and with a good few more months to go until he can be front facing we definitely need another option!

If you're in the UK, the law has already changed and they need to be read facing until at least 15 months, so you will need to purchase a suitable seat.

Have you looked into rear facing him for longer? There are some great seats out there which rear face to around 4yo. Imo its the safest direction for babies and toddlers to travel in.

I think I'll take a trip to Halfords and have a chat with them about it. I've probably only got a few more weeks until he's too big for this one at the rate he's growing so I'll see what's available in larger rear facing.

Who ever knew babies would be so expensive?!

I wouldn't recommend Halfords OP. Phone the In Car Safety Centre and chat through the options with them. Their customer service is simply excellent.

If there's one baby/child product that's worth the expense it's a safe car seat!

DS2 is 98th centile for height and weight. We have a britax two way elite which has a 25 kg max weight so will last longer than most other car seats.
We got it from the in car safety centre.

Check out the 'car seat advice for mummies and daddies' group on Facebook. Their advice is excellent. I wouldn't recommend Halfords either as they don't have a great range and aren't the most knowledgeable.

My DS isn't far behind yours in weight and he's 4 months. My plan is to put him into my DD's Be Safe Izi Kid I Size seat (rear facing to 18kg) in a few months and move my DD into the Axkid Minikid (rear facing to 25kg).

My DS is only 2 months old but he's big so I think he's going to grow out of his car seat (up to 13kg) pretty quickly. I'm planning to buy one of these:

Agreed with another poster, Halfords give dangerous advice. Look up shops that stock extended rear facing seats near you and go to one of them for advice.

Halfords aren't great for advice.

I've got a Joie Steadi as we want to rearface until four as it's safer. DD currently using a Maxi Cosi Pebble - 17 months and 25lb, head not quite at the top yet. It doesn't matter if they look scrunched up, the important thing is to rearface and have the right weight limit for the seat.
