Taking a 3 month old on holiday - tips please!

Hi all
Am taking our 3 month old on holiday to Portugal in 2 weeks' time and wondered if anyone had any advice/ tips with regards to travelling on a plane and/or dealing with the hot weather? For example someone suggested giving him cooled boiled water if I think he's dehydrated although he's exclusively breastfed and the NHS website says only bottle fed babies need water top ups in hot weather...

If he's bf he doesn't need water, he'll just feed more :-) we went to France when DS was 4 months, it wasn't hot though. His sleep was pretty dire but we had a lovely time anyway! Hope you get some sunshine!

Tips - Stay out of the sun around lunchtime (we enjoyed a nice long lunch out most days instead of evening meal out - not only did that fit with baby routine a bit better but it stopped us being out in the hottest part of the day). Lots of sun cream, a sun suit for the pool/beach. Other than that, you'll be fine - 3 month old is very portable, much easier than a toddler!

I had no need for giving cooled water, just found that DS wanted to breastfeed a bit more than usual. Keep yourself hydrated too!

Took DS2 to Majorca at 3 months too.I was EBF and it was fine.Get a nice sunhat.I took the car seat and used it as a multipurpose seat in the apartment on the beach or by the pool.You won't need many clothes,mine just wore a vest during the day

I need help with holiday ideas for my family too - anyone had success taking three kids away for a summer break?? I did post asking this earlier, but thought you might be able to help here too. xA

Portugal is a great place to go with a little one. Short flight, good weather, but very hot in August, you can buy everything you need in the supermarkets, people love kids. Would definitely invest in decent sun shade for pram, not just brolly but a full UV cover. Something cool for baby to lie on in pram as they can get rather sweaty, sun suit and sun hat for in the water. There are loads of really good quality villas which makes going on holiday with children cheaper, especially with 3 or more as finding a family room to accommodate that many is a nightmare. Have a great holiday.

Amelie also look at Puerto Pollensa in Majorca.Went there when I just had toddler &baby but apartment had 3 bedrooms & shared heated pool,a lot of then seem to in the Pinewalk area which is v close to the beach.Lovely beach for children,restaurants are family friendly.Would go back but this year going to Portugal with 3 so glad to hear it is good yummum

Beatrixpotty - hope you have a great time, I have family out there who emigrated 10 years ago. Depends where you go I suppose, every country has its good and bad areas. We are near Vilamoura. Have usually stayed in my uncles empty villa but he has rather inconveniently sold it! This year we are in a privately rented house in a complex - something new for us but with 3 kids it gets so expensive!

Sunhat, sun cream, UV Tent for the beach so he can nap in there/you can feed him in there without fear of him getting burnt too.
sling for the flight (really helps having your hands free!), pushchair can go in the hold.
Breast feed going up and breast feed while landing (helps their ears)

Don't worry about cooled boiled water, just make sure you're hydrated as he'll need more milk. You might want to consider expressing so you can have a break every now and then?

I took DD around Europe when she was about 3 months old and we had a brilliant time. She's very well travelled and the breastfeeding really helped (she was the only one who didn't get a dodgy tummy in morocco, even though she was on solids!)

Final thing - have a great time! (Make the most of him being portable and unable to run off!)

Try and hold off feeding until you're actually taking off. They need the sucking and swallowing to equalise their little ears.
