Hi my ds did his 1st after school tonight and said he doesn't want to go again. He chats about it with excitement but says he's scared am not coming back for him. He is very insecure due to his a scent dad constantly letting him down. Wwyd do I respect his wishes or persuade him to try one more time. I don't want to make him unhappy. Would appreciate some words of wisdom thankyou

Was it an activity or because you work?

I'd personally try him again. As he gets use to you always coming for him, he will be less anxious.

Do you have any other options if he really doesn't take to it after a couple of weeks?

I think you need to give it more than one day, as it's bound to feel a bit strange on the first day. Have you spoken to the after school club's leaders? Are they aware that your son may need some support to settle in? Do any of your son's friends go to the after-school club? And, realistically, do you have any alternative to him going? Where would he go if he didn't go there?

Sorry, that's a lot of questions. Looking at my daughter's friends, some of them did find after school club hard going when they were 4, just because it made for such a long day. And, IME, some after school clubs are simply better than others.

Thanks for replying. It is multi skills in his school so he sees some of his friends. I don't work so not going wouldn't be a problem. He just seemed to get excited explaining what went on so yes sending out mixed messages. I might try persuade him to try again. I wish he wasn't so insecure it breaks my heart Sad

Ah. I thought it was after-school childcare rather than a club. In that case, I would be more relaxed about giving it up, but still think it's worth persevering for at least another week.
