That's it really. What responsibilities does your 7 year old have if any?

My 7 yr old helps lay the table and helps get out breakfast stuff and helps clear the table.

He has to ensure his clothes are put in the laundry basket.
Has to take his coat and his school bags upstairs when he gets home and leave in the hall.

Feed his fish.

Also tidying up of toys etc.

And has to help me weed the veg patch

It's not much but it's a start to build on.

I only ask as the 7 year old I mind only seems to put his washing in the basket and that's it. I feel responsibilities might help his behavior which can sometimes be an issue. When ever I say he needs to carry his coat if not wearing it and I won't have it on the heavy buggy with his school bag he looks at me like it's the biggest task in the world! I was thinking things like clearing his plate off the table would be a good start.

My 7 year old...

Helps lay the table
Helps stack & unstack the dishwasher
Tidies his bedroom the night before the cleaner come (i don't pay her to put away toys!)
Put dirty clothes in the laundry bin
Puts his laundered clothes away

And occasionally empties the washing machine - he really likes this job for some reason Smile

Maybe laying the table perhaps at weekends and helping clear away is a start ?

I've never thought of it those terms before but I expect her to

Keep room tidy
put washing in laundry basket
put shoes, bag, coat in proper place after school
Give me any school letters
get up, dressed, brush teeth, pack school bag in morning
Help clear away and do dishwasher after meals (with other older dcs)
Help set table with older dcs
Practice instrument
Keep to limits regarding electronic games/screen time

She's done all these for more than a year.

Yes, she carries her own stuff home from school. If any of my dcs tried to get me to carry their stuff I'd say "do I look like a donkey?". Grin

Saying that, I'm softer on other peoples children on playdates, if they come out of school and hand me their stuff I'll carry it. It's what they're used to.

He's nearly 8 but he (when reminded):

Makes bed
Sets table
Tidied room
Puts clean washing into piles
Brushes dog
Helps with dinner

As I said, he normally needs reminding&doesn't do all of these every day.

Gets herself washed in the morning or showered (I get the temp of water right in shower first though!)
gets her school stuff ready,(sometimes with a slight reminder) P.e kit /homework/ reading books.
when asked will willingly; set table, dry pots and put them away, help with the cooking (she loves that!) wash windows, hoover up and mop. Also sweep cobwebs from ceiling/or as high as she can reach, dust things generally fetch and carry.
BUT she hates having to tidy her room/ put clothes away in wardrobe and seems incapable of hanging coat up!

Oh and she likes it when she can 'do' her own packing up. (I will then check and make sure there is only and packet of mini jammi dodgers in there...!)

She dresses herself and that.is.it. Asking her to carry her own coat gets me the response you describe.

Hmm lots of your children seen to have quite a few responsibilities maybe we should start introducing a few gradually.

My seven year old has to feed his fish, feed the dog (with my supervision), tidy up his lego on vacuuming day, unpack his backpack (lunchbox to kitchen counter and forms and homework into school basket in the mudroom). On weekends he has to do random chores like empty all garbage cans into a trash bag (5 year old helps with this) or tidying up playroom, putting away clean socks and underwear into baskets in his room.

I have 5 YO, a 6YO and a 9YO (with ASD), all boys. They all have similar responsibilities. With the youngest 2 being similar ages and the oldest having ASD, they are all at a conveniently similar developmental stage.

They are expected to:
Hang up their coats, bags, etc after school
Unpack their lunch boxes, clear out contents and wash/dry the boxes ready for tomorrow
Set the table (cue endless rows over who has to do the worst job-cutlery!)
Clear the table and stack the dishwasher
Unstack the dishwasher and put clean stuff away
Keep their play spaces tidy and put away their own toys
Keep their own bedrooms tidy (not so good at this!)
Make their own beds (pull duvets over and straighten)
Dust and polish surfaces
Hoover a room (ie not stairs)
Certainly, they are expected to carry their own stuff to/from school. As is the tiny 4YO I occassionally take with us, although when she says her PE bag is too heavy to carry I do take pity on her!

I would never carry for a child who gave me 'that' look. I'd drop the ungrateful so-and-so's stuff on the ground and leave it before I carried it for him.

My youngest is almost 6. His responsibilities are to lay the table every night for dinner, put his own clothes in the wash basket. He gets his own breakfast, he gets himself ready for school with no reminding, assuming I have made sure he has clean uniform in his drawer. He helps to feed the cats and used to help clean out the guinea pig hutch before she died. He will also help with other odd jobs when requested.
