Is my baby ill??

hi, I'm a first time mum and need some advice. I usually ebf but Last night I topped up my baby's feed (at 10.30pm) with a little bit of formula as he hasn't been sleeping too well (he's 17 weeks and teething/going through 4 month sleep regression).

Anyway at 2 am he started being really really sick, (soaked through the sheets nothing like usual possetting) and was in considerable distress... He's been waking up and being sick most of the night. Is this because of the formula I gave him? Why would it have this effect? should I take him to doctor? Should I give him some breast-milk or hold off feeding him for a while? Aaah! What to do?

Hi Agatha, didn't want you to go unanswered.

Not sure whether it could be the formula, but I would say BF regardless as you don't want him to get rehydrated. Someone more useful will be along shortly.

Hope he is better soon.

Sorry, that would be dehydrated

It sounds like he has a bug. Don't stop feeding him, BM is easily absorbed and even if he continues to be sick, he will absorb something. Feed as much as he wants to, little and often if necessary (it might mean that you are stuck to the sofa today). If you are concerned call the OOH GP.

My pleasure Smile hope he improves quickly. FWIW, I always err on the side of caution and contact the GP earlier rather than later if things don't improve rapidly.

Have you taken his temperature?

Good idea - I'll call the doc today. I stupidly don't have a thermometer - sending dh out to get one soon as shops open. Thanks again

If you are worried about baby being dehydrated phone the out of hours GP or NHS direct. If you breast feed and DS throws it all up again, I suggest you phone for medical advice. It's worrying when they are that tiny, I remember my DS and his first vomiting bug ... not nice!

Keep breastfeeding, even if he throws it up breastmilk is digested very quickly so he'll have got some of it.

As the others have said, sounds like a bug. Was it the first time he's had formula? Lots of babies find it quite tough on their tummies at first, and cow's milk is a pretty common allergy so it's possible he is reacting to that.

Thanks guys... he has taken a little bit of breastmilk but has thrown it up again... Keep trying to make him drink but he' s not interested ( v unusual for him) ... He has had formula before but only 2 or 3 times and only in small amounts... I wonder if it could be something to do with my bottle steriliser or perhaps it is a bug. Think I will phone nhs direct

If you are worried about him becoming dehydrated, give him some cooled boiled water if he won't take milk. If he has a bug, the fat in the milk may contribute to him throwing it back up - but keep trying to bf him as well.

I second the advice about gp, my ds had a 24 hour bug at 4 months and the emergency gp came out to us (it was 10:30 pm when we realised it wasn't normal possetting). Definitely worth checking put it out.

I would also say that my ds had exactly the same reaction to his first formul though. He was probably 8 or 9 months and still not sleeping through and I was desperate. He threw up 4 times that night after eaxh formula feed, but was fine after breastmilk. He just didn't like it! Wasn't allergy, just too dramatic a change for him.

Hope your little one is feeling better soon.

Did you make up the bottle with very hot water?

Thanks everyone - have called gp and they think it sounds like a bug...thanks for all the advice.. Will keep attempting to bf and will try cooled boiled water to make sure he doesn't get too dehydrated. Re: bottle of formula... I used ready made actimel that came in a little carton. My husband put the bottle to sterilise in the steriliser (which we use v rarely as I bf and am not good at expressing). thanks for all your support.

There is no need to give cooled boiled water (or anything else in fact) if you are breastfeeding only. BM is really gentle on the tummy and contains minerals to replace some of what he's lost from the vomiting and supplying him with energy. Water will only provide water.

If it was ready made formula and a sterilised bottle, I'm sure it won't be a bug from that then. Just keep bfing little and often.
