Hid in a very dark, quiet place for a few weeks & only came out when it'd been long enough for everyone to have forgotten / couldn't be bothered to wish me happy birthday. 41st will be better - I'm over it now.

Mine's next year... I don't know what to do really watching this thread with interest.

I have friends dotted all over the place. Quite FriendLY with everybody I meet but don't have loads of friends on my doorstep. Someboyd has suggested going away for a weekned but that would cost about 200e and I dont want to expect people to fork out that much. but a big party would stress me out. I'm single and I dont' really feel like inviting a load of couples..... I'd rather jsut have a meal with a few girlfriends. But is that enough for your fortieth. I had a meal with a few girlfriends for my 39th.

sorry for thread hijack btw.

Had a yurt in garden, catered bbq, lots of kids and adults, all day do. Loved it.

We celebrated DH's 40th with a big birthday BBQ in the garden, lots of friends, wine and laughter. It was great.

We invited everyone from near and far, but said that we understand if they cannot manage to travel so far.

Lots of people brought salads/desserts etc.

DH loves magic/Derren Brown-type illusions so for his 40th we hired a small-ish hall and a magician. We had caterers in and everyone came in DJs/posh frocks. I found black and silver helium balloons for the tables, as well as black and silver table confetti. The magician circled the room doing table magic as we were eating, and then a floor show afterwards. He managed to levitate my SIL as well.
Great evening.

Mine is next year. We'll probably have a sort of open house from mid-afternoon onwards - fancy dress / cold buffet / quizzes / Wii etc then chilli and baked potato type stuff for anybody who wants to stay into the evening.

Mine was v miserable, but the best 40th party I went to was my best friend's. She had a 40-hour party. I lasted about 8 hours (I was pg with ds1 at the time, so I do have an excuse). It was fabulous. She had the biggest mirror ball the world has ever seen in her living room and we danced our socks off and yakked for hours.

I like the idea of hiring my local arts cinema -you get to chose the film and get your name in the programme. Then I would hire their bar for party afterwards. Friend's dh has a good party band so I want them too.
I am sick of catering for parties and really sick of cleaning up afterwards so will save up to have someone else do it for me.

On the other hand ... I really want to do that flying thing where you skydive in a wind tunnel - so I would just take the kids and we'd all do it and then stay inm a nice hotel.

Or I was on the train going through the peak district on Saturday and I was hankering after a hike with friends, pub meal and a stay in a hostel like I did prechildren.

Like all the outdoor stuff, but it will be winter (end of Jan), and we have a small house and even smaller garden!!
Cinema idea interesting......
