How do I go about getting my childrens book published ??

Hi, I've been writing poetry since I was about 7. I've always loved it and it comes quite naturally to me.
I've written several poems for family/ friends weddings, funerals etc. I've always thought that I'd like to write a childrens book. So now I've done it. I'd love to have it published but I'm not sure how to go about it. I'm not an artist but my friend is a graphic designer and she's said that she could do the art work.
The problem with that is she could do all the art work and it may never be published, so she would've done all the work for nothing.
If any one has any idea how this works then please could you let me know.
I've only just finnished this book and I'm having ideas for others. It is very addictive. I'd love to see my work in print.
