Cleaning cotswold stone

I suspect I might have to bump this a few times before I get a a reply, but it's worth a try:

Very dull subject I am afraid. We have a cotswold stone fireplace (creamy yellow stone - I think probably quite porous), and it has some grubby marks on it. Anyone know how to clean it? (normal cleaning products would be a disaster)

Haven't studied in detail so not sure, but period property might have the answer. If not, you could always try sending in your own question.

HMC we've got a Farmington fireplace and the instructions say you should scrub it with warm soapy water - however, I've never been able to get it back to its pre-coal and logs state. But to be honest, I can seldom be arsed. DD2 scribbled all over it in pencil and that (is it Flash??) eraser thing worked perfectly - removed the lot.
