How to cope when your child (whatever their age) is seriously ill.

I am concerned about my mum.
My sister has cancer. She's had surgery and will start chemo imminently. She will, in all probability, make a full recovery.

However I am rather concerned with how my mum is coping. I don't think she's cracking up exactly, but I would like to know if anyone has any advice on how I can support her. It must be the worst thing in the world seeing your own child going through this. Mum is generally a "coper", she's strong and she deals with things. She's not a great talker in the confiding sense.
Can I do anything to help her? I'm not close by and can't get to her for at least 3 weeks (school and work committments).

All advice, any experiences, to share?

Hi Posey -

It's hard being far away from family when worrying things are going on.

I have no experience or direct knowledge of this, but would suggest looking around on Amazon to see if there might be a good book to order (can a family doctor recommend?).

Or perhaps one of the charities relating to cancer might be a good place to look for support. Maybe try here? Perhaps they can help, or direct you somewhere that might be useful.

Good luck with it all. Will be thinking of you.

I second Macmillan. Can any of the nurses at your sister's hospital point you (or your mum) in the right direction?

Best wishes to all of you
