How big is the event? Is it a cast of thousands with a grand Ceremony, daytime events/workshops/activities? Is it a small dinner?

That's a small to medium event. ( even a 9000 footfall one day festival is a medium event) .
There are dozens and dozens of event management companies. Some work nationwide others regionally. I work with a couple in the south west. Some em co are better at certain types of event ( pop festival / sports event/ food festival/ art exhibition are quite different to each other.)
If your looking in south west England pm me with a bit more detail and I'll have a think about which em co might suit you.

If you're able to hold it at one of the larger hotels/conference centres, then they will have their own event planners and with a bit of extra work you won't need to hire in an external event manager, unless you want fancy stuff. In Birmingham the ICC might be an option, or if you're in Wales that big hotel off the M4 whose name I can never remember!

It also depends on your budget. Some companies spend thousands on events, and others (like mine) have a tiny budget so we do a lot of the work ourselves and have learned to cut corners. We used to spend £7K a year hiring in someone just to find a venue - ridiculous and unnecessary, but there was no one there who knew how to find venues.

If you have an idea of location, the local Business organisation, Chamber of Commerce, Marketing initiative or Tourist information will be able to help point you in the right direction.

Are they good or not - tough question. Do they do the sort of event you want, do they have a news section that is up to date with jobs they have done. DO they belong to any trade and industry bodies, do they work to British standards in management of temporary electrical supplies ( if relevant) or food hygiene ( if relevant) . Can you talk to previous customers.

PS8 are bloody good. - I don't work for them, but have worked along side, they work at national and international level.
