4 yr old "don't want to go to nursery mummy"

please help, DS (4) is in a lovely local preschool 3 days a week (9-3.30pm). He seems to thoroughly enjoy his time there and always comes out with a huge smile, waving sheets of drawings and chattering about what he has done.
His teacher says he is smiley and settled very well and starting to make friends.

But every morning we have a sulky clingy "don't want to go to nursery" period which lasts right up until I get him settled with an activity.

Now he is very resistant to alot of things, even saying NO to a suggestion of going to the park to have an icecream. So is it just his standard contrariness or should I be concerned?

No I wouldn't be concerned unless it's a very sudden change and he's getting very upset, my dd2 (3 and a half) often says she doesn't want to go but that's only because she prefers to spend time with me which is nice but I think she needs her sessions at nursery to help her development and independence and I know she loves it when she is there and is happy to go in once we get there.

I don't think this is a problem, children this age qute often decide they don't want to go places or do things, keeping him in his routine is excellent though you are doing the right thing by still taking him to preschool, especially as he will be startng school in the near future.
you say he's happy when he comes out at the end of the session, so I wouldn't have any concerns that he has any issues their. I would ask preschool what topics they will be covering so you and DS can chat about whats going to happen and perhaps he could take a book or toy in that relates to what they will be learning, this may make him feel more involved and take his mind off the not wanting to go.
