From Friday 30th March, and throughout the Easter holidays, parents and children are invited to explore the fascinating history of Portsmouth, as Gunwharf Quays hosts its Easter Heritage Trail.

The Gunwharf Quays Easter Heritage Trail promises to bring history to life as children explore the centre’s rich naval heritage, discovering fascinating facts and figures along the way. With Easter treats and stickers up for grabs, the Heritage Trail is the ideal Easter family activity. The activity is free for all, but any donations will go towards Gunwharf Quays local charity of the year, Naomi House.

Dating back to the 12th century, the site on which the bustling centre now stands has been used for different purposes throughout the years; from Richard I’s Royal Galleys in 1194 to the Royal Naval Base in the 17th Century, the centre provides a balance of Portsmouth’s historical past with today’s well-known day-out-destination.

Colin Wilding, General Manager at Gunwharf Quays said: “Gunwharf Quays has a rich and unique history, and with our listed buildings and waterfront location, alongside our vibrant mix of shops, leisure activities and places to eat, it’s perfect for a family day out. With our new Easter Heritage Trail, families can find out more about the history of the site, from the days of Nelson, to its time as a Royal Navy base known as HMS Vernon.

It is the site’s rich past that makes the centre extra special, with original listed buildings sitting alongside the modern Emirates Spinnaker Tower, and we hope the trail, with treats at the end, will make the day even more memorable for our visitors.”

The Heritage Trail will not only be a fun activity for all families, but it will also provide an educational activity showcasing the proud naval history of the City.

Following the informative trail, families can re-fuel at one of Gunwharf Quays 30 restaurants specialising in different world cuisines with restaurants the likes of Zizzi and Giraffe offering up to 50% off selected menus. With up to 90 well-known brands offering up to 60% discount on regular retail price, the day can end with a spot of retail therapy to refresh that summer wardrobe.
