Adding a message

Ok I've asked admin a couple of times but still can't figure it out. Please help. I want to be able to respond to a post already on a thread. I want to put their username plus part of a sentence they have posted on my post so I can respond. I've seen it on many threads, it comes up in bold. Can anyone tell me how. I obviously need step by step instructions.

you just need to bold it.

Instructions are underneath the 'message' box, but you put an asterisk before and after the word you want to bold.
