.... that's it. I am teaching myself guitar and DC is learning alongside me. Will be soon 10 and is on the slightly tall side..

As it's a DIY project, I cannot ask a teacher. Just wondered when others did the upgrade.

It’s on size rather than age. Assume you have a full size guitar, so let them try yours occasionally and get them their own when they prefer yours!

I agree. My tall DS aged 9 is still well in the size range for 3/4 sized, especially as his has no strap so it's worth considering the weight of the guitar as well as reach accross the fretboard and correct positioning of strumming hand.

Some petite adults use a 3/4 size so it is entirely personal preference. When the guitar seems too small or you want to replace it for whatever reason, try him out with a bigger one either yours or at a music shop.

thanks, the 3/4 still is a good fit. In the complete absence of a teacher, I wondered if there is an age where one goes up. You have settled it for me Smile

My dd will be 12 this year and is currently a little under 5ft she still uses the 3/4 size and I don’t foresee her moving up for a while. I’m 5ft and play on a 3/4 size myself.

Much better to have one that feels comfortable, acoustic guitars can have quite a big body , making it hard to reach over. I have a 7/8 size classical guitar which I love as looks full size but fitted my fingers better. Lovely that you are learning together, good luck with it.

YY, it’s about size, DS is tall (91st centile). He went into a full size guitar Spring last year. His old 3/4 size was beyond repair. The full size was a little stretch to start with, but he grew into quickly abd uses it with a footrest. He’s about to take Grade 2 on his full size guitar.
