Practical things and tips that help adults with ASD?

I've tried searching threads for this, but can't see anything, and Google just brings up results for children. Not sure how successful this thread will be as we're all different, but here goes!

I've been recently diagnosed with ASD (the psychologist said under the old diagnostic criteria it would have been Aspergers) and I'm at a bit of a loss to find a nice list of practical tips to help me manage or to make life easier. What do others do?

Work isn't so much of an issue (I think!), because of what I do and how it's structured.

Things I have done already:

  • Given up on any shoes with laces;
  • Switched from bras to Sloggi comfort crop tops;
  • Switched as many of my clothes as possible to 'posh/smart' soft clothes (slowly, as budget allows), e.g. bamboo socks, bamboo yoga pants instead of jeans and leggings;
  • Use of noise-cancelling headphones indoors to let DH watch what he wants on TV without it annoying me / to cut out other house noises, rather than getting wound up.

I'm going to get a sunflower lanyard for the odd occasion I have to go into a shop (I find the addition of mask-wearing + shop environment + trying to social distance makes shutdown episodes really common and people seem to get irritated with me not being quick / being unable to talk properly). Likewise going to get the autism card I have seen advertised for £1 - that would have been helpful in several situations over the years.

Are there any other tips that people have, or recommendations? I wonder if I'm missing something obvious. Thanks for any suggestions Flowers

I didn’t realise a card was available. Thanks for that info.

I was diagnosed with Aspergers 4 yrs ago.

Is this the autism card you were talking about?

I might get one. Thanks for the tips. I absolutely hate bras, so I will check out the Sloggi ones.

I tend to have dim lights around the house and I've started wearing sunglasses more often outdoors, even if it's not too sunny. It helps stops headaches.

I still get very car sick on long journeys but not sure what to do about that.

I'm trying to pay more attention to my body and mind so I understand the signs of a shutdown before it happens.

I know I need to eat regularly to stop getting 'hangry'. Grin

And I know it's ok to hide away and take it easy for a few days if things start to feel overwhelming.

Maybe different but I was diagnosed when I was very young and I am kind of in denial about it as an adult a lot of the time
But I have to have my routines printed out and laminated about the house reminding me how to get dressed etc
I also have little card I carry about with me reminding me about things like when it is appropriate to ask someone for a hug, having a conversation, bumping into people I know etc
I have had to become more dependent on these aids since my dad died and I just by own now, but I am lucky I have friends at work and outside of work to help me, and I also use social media like Facebook to get advice from friends etc
I not sure if this will help anyone else but even though I am an adult, I still do use the ones aimed at kids cos I can understand them better but you guys might be cleverer than me 🙂

Oh and I do have the “I am autistic card” just in case and also a sunflower lanyard I have started to wear whenever I am out of the house, cos my swimming and verbal communication has suffered a lot in lockdown and it just reminds people to be patient but I am lucky where I live and work everyone is always really nice to me 🙂

By swimming I actually meant stimming but it always autocorrects to swimming 😂
