Hello!

My girls are now 6 weeks old. I'm trying to breastfeed them, sometimes its all going well and i feel like i have enough of milk but sometimes its feels like there is not much at all.

Like for example today i didnt have many milk infows.

Is it possible that my milk supply is decreasing? Has anyone had that?

Thank you

Hi, your milk isn't decreasing. It's common at 6 weeks to feel that you don't have enough milk. It tends to coincide with a growth spurt. Your breasts have probably shrunk back a bit but your milk production is still good. Keep going and you'll see that all is well.

I breastfed my pair to 18 months and stopped because I wanted to stop. I support lots of twin mums who breastfeed and what you are feeling is common at 6 weeks.

In a few days it should all settle again and you'll find that you have more than enough.

May be express a bit to increase supply. It is really based on supply demand. For me when I expressed I was always able to get 80-120ml per session which was enough for my prem twins. I did notice my supply was lowest in the evening and highest in the mornings. May be it depended on how rested I felt and also my fluid intake. I stopped at 4 weeks only because I was very exhausted from expressing and bottle feeding since my babies had a very bad suck reflex.

I had started to nurse towards the end and always expressed after a feed so that babies took what they wanted first.

You're not alone, I felt exactly the same way at 6 weeks. Stick with it and feed as much on demand as you can (though I always used to feed together so went on demand with the first baby to wake up!). Your milk supply will catch up with the babies' new found appetites in a day or two.

Just to make you feel better, once this growth spurt was over, I really felt on top of things a bit more, the feeding settled down and they started being a bit more regular and predictable.

Give yourself an enormous pat on the back for what you've done so far, and keep going, you're doing brilliantly!
