well what a book!

........................... SPOILER ALERT .......................
at first i wasnt quite sure what to make of this book especially as it was said at the beginning that Ben dT paid the ultimate sacrifice for trying to clear the names of his son and his friend.

also knowing that this book was about Apartheid made it a strong and poignant novel which i am very pleased to have had the pleasure of reading. the subject of South Africa and Apartheid must always be very emotive - thank goodness it is a thing of the past.

the writing is beautiful and the injustice is plain to see .......... i love these words " If I act, I cannot but lose. But if I do not act, it is a different kind of defeat, equally decisive and maybe worse. Because then I will not even have a conscience left."

excellent choice its justa thank you Smile no other reviews?

Just finished this today (I stayed in bed till 2.30pm, just so I could finish it!)

When I first got it, I saw the type size and font and was immediately put off. I thought I'd need a magnifying glass to read it!

However, once I started it, I got into it very quickly. What a story - and to think that it took place in 1976! Shocking. Is it based on a true story? I thought the writing was beautiful, and the characters were great. I'm sure I stopped breathing at the end with the betrayal by his daughter!

By the time I got to the epilogue, I'd forgotten the beginning - ie, that Ben had sent his papers to the narrator and he had been killed - so it came as a shock. It really felt like Ben was telling his story.

My favourite bit was when Stanley came to the house drunk during Christmas dinner with the extended family.

I enjoyed this so much that I'm going to suggest it as the next book for my RL bookgroup. Thanks for choosing it.

a fantastic book, one of those that makes you wonder "what would I have done?". Great choice, thank you.

Really enjoyed this book too - and another who is amazed to think that this could happen during my lifetime. Truly shocking. There was a real sense of a man trapped, everything closing in on him as he gradually lost everything and everyone.

One criticism - some truly awful descriptions of sex! Grin
