Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

miscarriage - how long might bleeding last?

I opted for a natural miscarriage and have been bleeding now for 6 weeks. I had heavy blood loss at first and since then it got lighter but has got a lot heavier again for the second time. It feels like its never going to end.

Any advice on how long it might go on for. It feels too long to me - I might go to the Doctor?

Thanks

Hi sorry for your loss just going through it too. I'm now on my 2nd natural mc. I was told last time that i would bleed for about 2 weeks and to do a preg test after 2 weeks and if it was still poss to go back to EPU. Bleeding actually only lasted a week and eased off straight after the membrane sac passed completely. If you are still bleeding either it hasn't cleared completely or you could be having your next period. Do a test and then see doc

My condolences to the previous posters, it's an awful thing to go through.

Yes I would go to your GP or back to the EPU that saw you when you started to MC. I thought usually they scan you after anyway to make sure that the MC was complete?

I do remember they told me you could bleed for up to 6 weeks, but if your bleeding is now heavier again I think it would be reasonable to ask for a scan now.

Hi Renaissance I'm very sorry for your loss. I also opted for a natural mc and bled for nearly 11 weeks. Sometimes the blood loss can be more or less according to how far along you were in your pg when you miscarried. During that time I did have scans which showed that there were no retained products but continued to bleed regardless. The doctors I spoke to were a bit stumped and couldn't offer much advice, so I put myself back on BCPs for a month to try and sort myself out. Unfortunately, I'm still having problems with my cycle 7 months on, but I believe I'm the exception to the rule in this regard. This is not intended to scare you by the way. I just feel that it would have helped me to know that we don't all recover in 7-10 days as hospital literature would suggest!

It could well be that your problem is due to retained products - especially if the blood loss is getting heavier - and an ultrasound will rule this out for you, which is probably what your GP or EPU will suggest. It's a very good idea to go back and get checked out anyway to rule out the possibility of infection. It definitely won't be a period (as you are probably aware anyway) as you need to have stopped bleeding for at least 4 weeks in order to have a normal cycle again.

It's a horrible thing to go through, particularly when the endless bleeding is a constant reminder of your loss. I really hope you get some answers and a solution soon.

Wow so sorry to hear of the losses here, I am just posting that my mc bleed seems to have stopped after four days, just to give anyone newly going through it hope that it doesn't necessarily last weeks (I was at three weeks past conception)

Sorry for your loss. I have miscarried this week so I know it's early days but I'm finding that just as the bleeding seems to be calming down it gets heavy again. My miscarriage seems to have been a complete one so I was kind of hoping the bleeding would stop sooner rather than later.

Hi! RenaissanceWoman

So, so sorry to hear of your loss. It is devasting.

I had a mmc at 15 weeks last year. Baby had died at 12 weeks. I had an erpc. I bled for a total of 7 weeks. The bleeding was just as you described, heavy at first then lighter then heavy as before. I was so fed up. The last bit of bleeding must have been a period, as I stopped bleeding then had another period 4 weeks later.

I hope that kind of makes sense. Apologies if it doesn't as I am a bit of a mess at the moment, having just lost my baby at 17 weeks.

Sending you hugs and wishing you a swift return to normality.

xxx
