I had a positive pregnancy test yesterday morning, I think I'm around 4/5 weeks. Then this morning had some light pink spotting, and this afternoon have had some moderately bad cramping and bleeding.

If this is a miscarriage, does anyone know how long it will take for a pregnancy test to show a negative result? I guess if I test again now I will get a positive result regardless due to the hormones still in my system.

It seems it can take weeks for a neg test
Good luck

I think you will know if you are having a miscarriage before a test will work. You would have some really heavy bleeding. I had a miscarriage and the pregnancy test wasn't negative until after I had a d&C, I had to have one in the end...I would go for a scan if you can

Thanks Quietly, I'll read the thread.

8oreighty - would the bleeding be heavy even this early on? The bleeding I've had this afternoon has certainly been no heavier than an ordinary period. I don't think they'd do a scan until 6-7 weeks would they?

I think if you are miscarrying they will do a scan (but I am no expert on this...). I would call your gp first thing in the morning and ask what you should do. I heard that even early miscarriages are heavy, heavier than a period.

You poor thing. There are other signs eg your breasts will ''deflate''. This is almost certainly a miscarriage. Have you had many at this early stage before?

I think they will scan if they think it could be ectopic
However a scan may not tell you if the pg will continue or not at this early stage (assuming it's not ectopic)
They can do HCG blood tests too

argento, just wanted to tell you i had what seemed to me quite a heavy bleed same day i tested positive (around 5 weeks). I thought my period had started and it was all over. Bleeding stopped same day though and didn't start again. I waited a week and re-tested- got a massively stong positive. dd2 is now 6 months.
good luck x

tiredoldtrout - this is my first pregnancy, so I'm not sure what to expect.

CatIsSleepy - thanks, guess I can still hope.

poor you...i'd be hugely surprised if they offered a scan at this stage. very early scans don't show much if anything - most clinics won't do them until at least six weeks, unless there's something else going on (like ectopic) and even then, you can't see much. your GP is most likely to advise you to wait and see what happens - you will almost certainly know yourself, from the heaviness of the bleed, whether you have miscarried or not. No fun at all, i know...At less than five weeks, hopefully even if the worst happens it won't be much different to a normal period. hope you are okay and have the support you need

Hi

Late I know but if you ring the local scanning department because of the bleeeding and cramps they will scan you now.

I had a miscarriage last night myself and am still going through it now.

Take care

Kate xx
