Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Rising HCG Levels

I had a D&C for a missed miscarriage on 8 February and was only told it was a partial molar six weeks later after the tissue was analyzed. I had a negative home pregnancy test three weeks after the surgery and every week thereafter. Last week, I had a blood test reading of 7.5 hcg, so I assumed I would be negative (

Ask for a scan before you decide anything, it's the only way to get much of an idea of what is going on.

In a healthy pregnancy hcg should double at least every 48 hours - given the rise in your levels a week apart I would be concerned that it's either an ectopic pregnancy or your partial molar which still hasn't been resolved x

@polarpig thanks for your advice, I will try to get a scan as soon as there’s been enough time to see anything.

@crazyfools wow, now I’m even more worried, if that were possible. Have you had a molar? I thought if the levels got as low as 7.5 they would not go up again. Also, could be a chemical pregnancy maybe?? I really don’t want to start worrying about ecoptic too now...

I should mention I am only 12 dpo, so I don't think hcg of 45 is that low. I know hcg doubles every 48 hours in pregnancy, but I don't know what the rate is in molar pregnancies - I would have thought higher? I've never heard of hcg levels going as low as 7.5 and then increasing for molar, have you ladies?

You need to look for the levels doubling more than what the level actually is, though the level is relevant it's not as relevant. It's hard to say with early levels, that's why I said a scan - my levels were normal at first but then the doubling tailed off.

Thanks @polarpig, you are right about that. When is the earliest I can get a scan - 6 weeks? Since I clearly don't have an LMP, would that be about two weeks from a BFP?

@sadtoday21 they should probably do a repeat hCG after 48 hours, which will give them more info - whether it is rising normally and is likely to be a viable pregnancy, or whether it is a slow steady increase that suggests a problem (ectopic/molar). You could have a scan earlier than 6 weeks, but you might only see a gestational sac rather than a baby. Once your hCG levels are over about 1000 I believe, then you can see something on scan. If the hCG is doubling normally, then an hCG over 1000 is just over a week from now.

Best of luck Thanks

@mussie thank you so so much, this is very helpful info. CX is doing another blood test next week and I will have the results on Friday, so now I have a better idea of what to look for. Thank you again.

At 6 weeks you might see an sac, it might look to be empty and only show a baby at a later sac. I've seen 6 weeks scans with no fetal pole and a totally empty sac that have shown a successfull pregnancy at 9/10 weeks.

Ah if you're only 12 DPO then 45 sounds ok! When I read your post and the 7 days between having a hcg of 7.5 and then next one of 45 I thought you were further along!

Yes once you get to a HCG if around 1000 a sac should be visible. Usually HCG needs to be in region of 10,000 for a heartbeat to be seen

Good luck! Xx

Thanks @crazyfools, really appreciate it and def need all the luck I can get these days. From reading every past thread I can find related to this issueand there aren't many at all-it seems that at least two women got pregnant again a month or two after d&c and before they knew it was a molar pregnancy. One had relapse with chemo and the other had a baby. I guess I'll just have to wait a bit longer and take it one day at a time. Thank you again for reaching out xxx.
